Behçet’s Disease

Behçet’s disease is an inflammatory disorder of the blood vessels that causes skin and mucous membrane lesions, uveitis, arterial and venous diseases, as well as gastrointestinal and neurological disorders. The disease presents with various combinations and sequences of symptoms. It usually affects young adults between the ages of 20 and 30. Men tend to have a more active and severe form of the disease. It is more common among people living in the Middle East, East Asia, and the Mediterranean region. The disease can also have a genetic basis. In inherited cases, symptoms tend to appear earlier and are more severe. In the presence of severe eye, vascular, or central nervous system involvement, immunosuppressive therapy is used.
