Achlorhydria is a condition characterized by the complete absence of hydrochloric acid production in the stomach. The most common cause of achlorhydria is chronic atrophic gastritis affecting the fundus and body of the stomach. The condition itself does not usually cause symptoms, but affected individuals may develop deficiencies of iron, vitamin B12, or calcium and are more susceptible to intestinal infections. Achlorhydria also impairs the absorption of certain medications.
