FDA Approves First New Sunscreen Ingredient In More Than 25 Years
A new sunscreen ingredient could soon give Americans access to stronger and more reliable sun protection. After more than 25 years without approving a new over-the-counter sunscreen active ingredient, U.S. regulators have finally cleared a filter that has already been widely used in Europe, Australia, and Asia.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved bemotrizinol, also known as BEMT, and classified it as generally recognized as safe and effective. The ingredient will initially be marketed under the trade name Parsol Shield and is expected to appear in new sunscreen products in the coming years.
How Bemotrizinol Protects The Skin
Bemotrizinol is a chemical UV filter that absorbs both UVA and UVB radiation, providing broad-spectrum protection against sun damage. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to premature aging, while UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn and play a major role in the development of skin cancer.
One of BEMT’s biggest advantages is its photostability. Unlike some older sunscreen filters that break down when exposed to sunlight, bemotrizinol remains effective for longer periods, helping maintain consistent protection throughout sun exposure.
Dermatologists also value the ingredient because it offers particularly strong UVA protection. Many sunscreen formulations available in the United States have historically provided less comprehensive UVA coverage than products sold in Europe and other regions.
Why The FDA Approval Matters
Although bemotrizinol is new to the U.S. market, it has been used internationally for decades. In Europe, Australia, and several Asian countries, manufacturers routinely combine BEMT with other UV filters to create lightweight sunscreens that offer high levels of protection while remaining comfortable to wear.
The United States has lagged behind in approving newer sunscreen ingredients because sunscreen actives are regulated as over-the-counter drugs rather than cosmetics. This has resulted in a lengthy review process that left several modern UV filters awaiting approval for years.
The Sunscreen Innovation Act, passed in 2014, was intended to speed up evaluations of new sunscreen ingredients. However, progress remained slow, leading to growing frustration among dermatologists, researchers, and consumers seeking access to newer formulations already available overseas.
Safety Studies Support Approval
The FDA based its decision on extensive safety data submitted by manufacturers and reviewed by agency scientists. Studies examining skin absorption found that only very small amounts of bemotrizinol entered the bloodstream after topical application.
Researchers also evaluated the ingredient in long-term animal studies lasting up to two years. These investigations found no evidence that bemotrizinol increases cancer risk. Additional reproductive and developmental studies likewise found no harmful effects on fertility, pregnancy, or offspring.
Based on these findings, the FDA concluded that bemotrizinol is safe and effective for adults and children older than six months when used as directed. Health experts continue to recommend regular sunscreen reapplication, particularly after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying.
What Consumers Can Expect
The first U.S. sunscreen products containing Parsol Shield are expected to reach store shelves relatively soon. Initial launches will likely focus on consumers looking for advanced broad-spectrum protection and more cosmetically elegant formulas.
After an 18-month exclusivity period, other manufacturers will also be able to incorporate bemotrizinol into their products. Industry experts expect this to lead to a wider variety of sunscreens that combine BEMT with existing chemical and mineral filters.
Dermatologists emphasize that current sunscreens remain effective and should continue to be used. However, they welcome the addition of a new filter that expands formulation options and strengthens protection against harmful UV radiation.
With skin cancer remaining the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, experts believe broader access to modern sunscreen technology could contribute to improved public health in the years ahead.
