Scientists Developed a Wearable Ultrasound Patch That Boosted REM Sleep in Early Trial
Scientists have developed a soft wearable patch that uses ultrasound to enhance rapid eye movement (REM) sleep without medication or surgery. The device, called NEUSLeeP, was created by researchers led by the University of Texas at Austin and could eventually offer a noninvasive treatment for sleep disorders and certain mental health conditions.
The findings, published in Nature Communications, suggest the technology can help people enter REM sleep sooner and spend more time in this important sleep stage. Researchers believe the device may eventually support personalized sleep therapies and home-based treatment.
How the NEUSLeeP patch works
NEUSLeeP is a flexible, lightweight patch designed to be comfortably worn on the head during a normal night's sleep. It delivers gentle, precisely targeted ultrasound waves to deep brain regions involved in regulating sleep while remaining well below established safety limits.
The patch also contains built-in electrodes that continuously record brain activity throughout the night. This allows researchers to monitor how the brain responds to the ultrasound stimulation in real time.
Because the device both stimulates and measures brain activity simultaneously, it operates as a closed-loop system. Researchers can identify changes in sleep stages as they occur and fine-tune the stimulation to encourage more restorative sleep patterns.
Study found earlier and longer REM sleep
The technology was tested in a study involving 28 adults, with the results published in Nature Communications.
Participants using the NEUSLeeP patch entered REM sleep an average of 43 minutes earlier than when they slept without ultrasound stimulation. They also spent approximately 16 additional minutes in REM sleep over the course of the night.
The benefits were observed in both healthy sleepers and individuals experiencing mild sleep difficulties. Participants generally reported that the patch was comfortable to wear, and researchers recorded very few adverse effects during the trial.
Potential benefits for stress and emotional health
Among healthy participants, ultrasound stimulation was also associated with increased heart rate variability, a physiological measure commonly linked to better resilience to stress and improved autonomic nervous system function.
Brain imaging further revealed changes in neural circuits involved in emotional regulation.
Researchers note that REM sleep plays an important role in processing emotional experiences, consolidating memories and helping the brain recover from stressful events. Previous research has consistently linked disrupted REM sleep with depression, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Improving REM sleep may therefore offer benefits that extend beyond simply improving sleep quality.
Next steps for the technology
The research team is now planning larger and longer clinical trials to evaluate whether NEUSLeeP can benefit people with chronic insomnia, major depressive disorder and PTSD.
Researchers also envision the technology becoming part of personalized home sleep therapy, allowing treatment to be adjusted based on each person's brain activity during sleep.
The University of Texas is currently working with the research team to explore commercialization, and a patent application has already been filed. Although much larger clinical studies are still needed, the device could eventually provide a noninvasive alternative for millions of people living with sleep disorders and related mental health conditions.
