Living Near Gardens and Parks May Lower Type 2 Diabetes Risk
Access to gardens and parks may play a meaningful role in lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a large new study of UK residents. Researchers in Australia and the US have found that people living near more green space were less likely to develop the condition over time.
The study, published in BMC Public Health, analysed health outcomes for more than 400,000 adults enrolled in the UK Biobank, with a median follow-up period of 15.4 years. Hospital records were used to identify new cases of type 2 diabetes, allowing the researchers to track how the disease emerged over the long term.
The findings add to growing evidence that the environments surrounding people’s homes may influence chronic disease risk. Both private gardens and a greater number of nearby public parks were associated with a lower likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.
How the green space link was found
To measure environmental exposure, scientists drew on the OS MasterMap Greenspace Layer, a detailed map of public and private green areas across the UK. They assessed how much green space, including private gardens and parks, lay within 100 meters of each participant’s home.
When those environmental data were combined with health outcomes, a clear pattern appeared. Participants who had substantial private garden space near their homes were 6.8 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those with the least garden access.
Public green space also showed a protective trend. People living in neighbourhoods that contained four or more parks had a 5.7 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with those in areas with fewer parks, suggesting broader community benefits.
Interestingly, the precise walking distance to parks did not strongly change the association. The presence and density of parks around people’s homes seemed to matter more than whether a particular park was just a short stroll away.
Why gardens might protect health
The study is observational, meaning it can reveal associations but cannot prove that green space directly prevents diabetes. The researchers adjusted for factors such as smoking, alcohol use and family history, but unmeasured influences may still be present.
However, there are several plausible ways that gardens and parks could support metabolic health. People with convenient access to pleasant outdoor areas are more likely to be physically active, a key factor known to reduce type 2 diabetes risk, even among those with genetic susceptibility.
Previous research has found that residents of park-rich neighbourhoods engage in about 24 extra minutes of exercise per week compared with those in areas where parks are scarce. Small weekly differences in activity can translate into significant long-term health effects.
Green spaces may also help by reducing stress, improving sleep and encouraging social interaction, all of which are linked to better metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes. Time outdoors is associated with higher vitamin D levels and exposure to diverse environmental microbes that may benefit gut and immune health.
Inequality, housing and urban planning
The findings highlight how social and economic inequalities intersect with health. People on lower incomes or with less education are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and less likely to have private gardens or live near well-maintained parks.
In many cities, the housing crisis has increased reliance on high-density developments where private outdoor space is limited. For many households, gardens have effectively become a luxury, even as chronic diseases such as diabetes become more common.
Public health experts say this creates a clear policy challenge for governments and urban planners. As new housing is built, they argue, access to quality public green space should be treated as a core health intervention rather than an aesthetic add-on.
Study co-author Chinonso Odebeatu, an environmental epidemiologist at the University of Queensland, said that new residential projects need to prioritise well-designed green areas. Without this focus, decisions made today could lock in higher disease burdens for future generations.
What future research could reveal
The authors note that more work is needed to identify which features of green spaces are most protective. Simple fields of short-cut grass may not provide the same benefits as biodiverse gardens with trees, shrubs and space for gardening or play.
Private gardens could offer unique advantages by enabling people to spend time outside without social pressure, and to engage directly with plants and soil. That hands-on contact may support both mental wellbeing and biological processes linked to inflammation and immunity.
Further studies could also examine how green space interacts with diet, air pollution, noise and heat exposure, all factors thought to influence diabetes risk. Long-term intervention trials, where new green spaces are created and then monitored, would help clarify cause and effect.
For individuals, the new findings add weight to broader advice about lifestyle and environment. While no single factor can eliminate diabetes risk, making room for regular exposure to greenery, whether in a park, shared courtyard or small balcony garden, appears to be another useful tool for protecting long-term health.
Overall, the research forms part of a growing body of evidence suggesting that city design and land-use policies can act as important levers for chronic disease prevention, rather than simply determining how attractive neighbourhoods look.
