Trachoma is a chronic ocular infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. It should not be confused with adult inclusion conjunctivitis, another chlamydial eye infection that is typically self-limiting. In adults, trachoma generally presents with milder symptoms and a shorter disease course than in children. Recurrent infections lead to chronic conjunctival inflammation, conjunctival scarring, trichiasis, corneal opacification, and, ultimately, blindness.
