Feminine-Sounding Voices Triggered Stronger Jealousy In Taller And Slimmer Women

A new study of women in China suggests that a woman’s body size may influence how strongly she reacts with jealousy to another woman’s feminine-sounding voice. Taller and slimmer participants reported greater jealousy when imagining a rival flirting with their partner using a highly feminine voice.

The research, published in PsyCh Journal, examined romantic jealousy, an emotion often triggered by the fear of losing a partner’s affection, commitment or attention to a potential rival. Researchers note that jealousy tends to increase when a rival displays traits associated with high mate value, such as physical attractiveness or a youthful appearance.

Jealousy And Signals Of Mate Value

Previous research has supported the mate quality–jealousy hypothesis, which suggests that people experience stronger jealousy when potential rivals possess traits linked to higher reproductive or social value. Many of these characteristics are sexually dimorphic, meaning they differ noticeably between men and women.

In women, such traits often include features associated with femininity, including facial structure, body shape and vocal characteristics. A higher-pitched voice with certain acoustic qualities is often perceived as more feminine, youthful and attractive.

Study author Cairang Guanque and colleagues predicted that women would feel more jealous when listening to rivals with more feminine voices. They also expected this effect to be stronger among women who themselves possess traits commonly associated with higher mate value, including greater height and lower body weight or body mass index.

How The Study Was Conducted

The researchers recruited 134 heterosexual women between the ages of 18 and 40 from a university in China. The participants had an average age of 19.3 years.

The women listened to recordings of 131 female voices saying a simple greeting: “Hi.” Using acoustic analysis, the researchers measured pitch and formant frequencies, which influence how feminine or resonant a voice sounds.

Participants were asked to imagine that each woman was flirting with their romantic partner. They then rated how jealous they would feel on a scale from 1 (low jealousy) to 7 (high jealousy). Women who were not currently in relationships were instructed to imagine having a partner.

Researchers also measured each participant’s height and weight to calculate body mass index, allowing them to examine whether body size influenced reactions to feminine vocal cues.

Body Size Influenced Jealousy Responses

Overall, women reported greater jealousy when a rival’s voice sounded more feminine. However, the strength of this response varied depending on the listener’s body size.

Taller women appeared more sensitive to changes in both pitch and formant frequencies, suggesting they were particularly responsive to a broad range of vocal signals associated with femininity. As vocal femininity increased, taller participants tended to report larger increases in jealousy.

Women with lower body weight or a lower body mass index showed heightened sensitivity specifically to pitch. They reported stronger jealousy when a rival’s voice had a higher pitch, a feature often linked to youthfulness and attractiveness.

According to the researchers, these findings are consistent with the idea that women who possess traits associated with higher mate value may be especially motivated to protect their romantic relationships. They may perceive more attractive competitors as a greater potential threat.

Limitations And Future Research

The authors caution against overgeneralizing the findings. Most participants were young university students from a single institution in China, which may limit how well the results apply to women of different ages, cultures or backgrounds.

The study also focused solely on vocal cues. In real-world situations, jealousy is influenced by many factors, including appearance, body language, social status, personality and online interactions.

In addition, the findings reflect average trends rather than fixed rules. Personality, attachment style, relationship history and cultural expectations all play important roles in shaping how jealousy is experienced and expressed.

Despite these limitations, the research adds to growing evidence that mate competition can be influenced by subtle social and biological cues. It also suggests that individual characteristics, such as body size, may shape how people interpret potential threats to their romantic relationships.
