New research suggests that people may rely on the same mental processes to choose a romantic partner that they use for everyday decisions such as selecting food or shopping. The study, titled "Psychological Value Theory: Predicting Initial Romantic Partner Choice From a General-Purpose, Computational Cognitive Model of Value-Based Choice," published in Cognitive Science, found that a general-purpose decision-making model accurately predicted both which potential partners people preferred and how quickly they made those decisions.

How the Study Was Designed

The research team, led by Dale J. Cohen from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, conducted two experiments using hypothetical dating profiles.

In the first experiment, participants evaluated profiles containing a single characteristic, such as a personality trait or personal attribute. This allowed researchers to measure the value participants assigned to individual traits in isolation.

The second experiment presented participants with profiles that combined multiple characteristics. Volunteers were asked to choose between these more complex profiles, enabling the researchers to examine how people integrate several positive and negative qualities when evaluating a potential romantic partner.

In both experiments, the researchers recorded not only which profile participants selected but also how long they took to make each decision.

The results strongly supported Psychological Value Theory. A computational model based on this framework successfully predicted more than 85% of the variation in both participants' partner choices and their response times, suggesting that it captures key aspects of the cognitive processes involved in early romantic attraction.

One Outstanding Trait Can Dominate Attraction

One of the study's most important findings concerns how people evaluate multiple characteristics simultaneously.

Traditional theories often assume that individuals mentally add together all positive and negative qualities to reach an overall impression of another person. However, the new findings suggest that people rely on a more complex process that gives disproportionate weight to a single standout characteristic.

The researchers describe this mechanism as the "Biased Average" algorithm. Rather than assigning equal importance to every trait, the model allows one especially attractive quality to exert a much stronger influence on the final evaluation than several moderately positive traits.

As a result, one exceptional characteristic—such as an outstanding sense of humor, remarkable kindness, or exceptional intelligence—may outweigh numerous average qualities and strongly influence initial attraction.

This mechanism may also help explain why first impressions can feel so powerful during the earliest stages of romantic interest.

Why This Decision Model Matters

According to the researchers, the findings indicate that choosing a romantic partner relies on the same general-purpose value-based decision system used for many everyday choices.

Rather than operating through a specialized "love module," the brain appears to evaluate potential partners using the same cognitive machinery employed when comparing consumer products, meals, or other valuable options.

This provides researchers with a computational framework that may help explain why certain traits exert such a strong influence during the earliest stages of dating.

The model may also explain why people sometimes overlook important warning signs when one highly desirable characteristic dominates their overall impression. As relationships develop and additional information becomes available, these early evaluations may gradually change.

The study further demonstrates the importance of decision speed as a window into cognitive processing. Participants made faster decisions when one profile clearly stood out, whereas slower responses generally reflected closer competition between alternatives or greater internal conflict.

By analyzing both choices and reaction times together, the researchers were able to create a more detailed picture of how people evaluate potential romantic partners.

Limitations of the Research

The authors acknowledge several important limitations.

Participants evaluated written descriptions rather than interacting with real people. Consequently, many factors that shape attraction in everyday life—including facial expressions, body language, voice, chemistry, and social context—were absent from the experiments.

The study also focused exclusively on initial attraction, not on long-term relationship outcomes. The characteristics that attract someone at first meeting are not necessarily the same qualities that predict lasting relationship satisfaction or long-term compatibility.

Future research could examine whether the same computational model predicts whom people actually begin dating, maintain relationships with, or eventually marry. Longitudinal studies may also reveal how the relative importance of different traits changes as relationships progress over time.

Overall, the findings suggest that romantic attraction, while emotionally meaningful, may rely on surprisingly general cognitive mechanisms. Rather than being entirely unique, early partner choice appears to follow the same value-based decision rules that guide many of the choices people make in everyday life.
