The Neighborhood You Grow Up In May Shape When and How You Start a Family, Study Suggests
Growing up in economically disadvantaged or socially unstable neighborhoods may influence family formation years later, but not always in the ways evolutionary theories predict, according to a large Canadian study. The findings suggest that childhood environments leave a measurable imprint on reproductive patterns in adulthood while also highlighting important limitations of one of psychology's leading evolutionary frameworks.
The study, titled "Childhood Demographics and Socioeconomic Conditions Predict Reproduction 15 Years Later," was conducted by Vinícius Betzel Koehler of McMaster University and M.D. Rutherford. Published in Evolutionary Psychology, the research analyzed Canadian census data spanning 15 years to examine how childhood neighborhood conditions relate to family size and parenting patterns in early adulthood.
Testing an Evolutionary Theory
The researchers set out to evaluate psychosocial acceleration theory, a branch of life history theory that explores how organisms allocate energy between growth, survival, and reproduction depending on environmental conditions.
According to psychosocial acceleration theory, growing up in harsh or unpredictable environments may encourage earlier and more frequent reproduction. From an evolutionary perspective, reproducing sooner could increase the chances of passing on genes when future survival appears uncertain.
Within this framework, harshness typically refers to chronic poverty, material deprivation, or high mortality risk, while unpredictability includes experiences such as frequent moves, parental separation, unstable employment, and sudden financial changes.
Previous studies testing these ideas have generally relied on relatively small surveys or cohort studies. The Canadian researchers wanted to examine whether similar patterns could be detected using nationwide population data.
How the Study Was Conducted
The research team analyzed data collected by Statistics Canada from the 2006 and 2021 national censuses.
Rather than following individual participants over time, the researchers examined whether neighborhood characteristics measured in 2006 predicted patterns of family formation within the same geographic areas 15 years later.
The analysis included two geographic scales.
The first consisted of 39,481 small dissemination areas, each typically containing between 400 and 700 residents. The second involved 240 larger census divisions, which encompass groups of municipalities and tend to remain more stable over time.
To measure environmental harshness in 2006, the researchers examined median family income, the proportion of homes requiring major repairs, and the percentage of households spending more than 30% of their income on housing.
Neighborhood unpredictability was estimated using unemployment rates, residential mobility, and the proportion of single-parent or divorced households.
The researchers then analyzed several reproductive outcomes in 2021, including average family size, the number of children per family, and the average number of children among single-parent households.
Early Neighborhood Conditions Predicted Later Family Patterns
The strongest findings emerged from analyses conducted at the larger census division level.
Neighborhood conditions measured in 2006 explained approximately 81% of the variation in frequent reproduction 15 years later and about 64% of the variation in the number of children among single-parent families.
These are unusually large proportions of explained variation for behavioral research, suggesting that childhood community environments may have long-lasting associations with patterns of family formation.
One result aligned with psychosocial acceleration theory.
Areas with higher proportions of children living in low-income households in 2006 tended to have more single-parent families 15 years later, consistent with the theory's prediction that early economic hardship may influence later reproductive strategies.
However, several other findings contradicted the theory.
Neighborhoods with higher unemployment and greater housing affordability pressures in 2006 were associated with fewer large families and fewer single-parent households in 2021 rather than more.
The Role of Social and Economic Context
The researchers also examined whether the proportion of visible minority and Indigenous residents served as indirect indicators of chronic environmental hardship.
Because these populations often experience longstanding disparities in income, housing, health, and discrimination, the authors expected these variables might also predict accelerated reproductive patterns.
Although these demographic factors were statistically significant, their influence proved weaker than expected compared with direct measures of economic hardship.
The findings also differed from previous research conducted in Brazil, where harsher environments appeared more consistently associated with increased reproduction.
According to the authors, Canada's stronger social safety net, broader access to healthcare, and educational opportunities may alter how individuals respond to economic adversity.
Evidence for a Directional Relationship
To determine whether the observed relationships reflected a meaningful developmental sequence rather than simple correlation, the researchers reversed their statistical models.
When they attempted to use reproductive patterns measured in 2021 to predict neighborhood conditions recorded in 2006, the statistical relationships largely disappeared.
This asymmetry supports the possibility that earlier childhood environments help shape later reproductive outcomes rather than the reverse.
However, the researchers emphasize that these findings apply at the population level and should not be interpreted as predicting the life course of any individual child.
For parents, Koehler suggests that the practical lesson is straightforward: providing children with stable routines, consistent emotional support, and reliable caregiving is likely beneficial regardless of whether psychosocial acceleration theory fully explains these developmental patterns.
Important Limitations
The researchers acknowledge several important limitations.
Because the study relied on area-level census data rather than following individual people over time, it cannot determine whether the same individuals remained in the same neighborhoods throughout the 15-year period.
Migration, both within Canada and through immigration, means that the populations living in many neighborhoods likely changed substantially between 2006 and 2021.
As a result, some observed associations may reflect differences between groups of residents rather than changes occurring within the same individuals.
The researchers also note that non-evolutionary explanations remain plausible.
Economic hardship, unemployment, expensive housing, educational opportunities, access to childcare, and broader social policies all influence decisions about when and whether to have children and could account for several of the observed patterns.
The authors argue that future research should combine evolutionary theory with perspectives from demography, sociology, and public health. They also plan to examine life history predictions using additional datasets, including social media behavior, student populations, and more diverse community samples across different countries.
By comparing findings across cultural and economic settings, researchers hope to better understand when psychosocial acceleration theory accurately explains human reproductive behavior and when modern social institutions and public policies play a more influential role.
