A retropharyngeal abscess is a deep neck infection characterized by the accumulation of pus in the retropharyngeal space. Although this condition is rare, it is more common in children and can be life-threatening if diagnosis is delayed. In children under 2 years of age, it may present with non-specific symptoms such as fever and refusal to eat. The diagnosis is confirmed by computed tomography (CT) of the neck. Treatment consists of intravenous antibiotics and surgical drainage of the abscess.
