Flea Bite

A flea bite causes an itchy skin rash. Flea bites become more common in early spring, when holiday homes and cottages are heated while old bird nests are still unoccupied. Bird fleas are found in dry bird nests, such as those located in roof spaces or ventilation openings. They normally live on birds, but after the birds leave the nest, the fleas remain dormant in cocoons and become active again in early spring as temperatures rise. They may then infest other birds, humans, cats, or dogs. Fleas can enter buildings through windows, ventilation openings, or on domestic animals. At room temperature, fleas can survive for up to four weeks. After a flea bite, the affected area should be monitored for redness and swelling.
