Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease endemic to parts of South America and sub-Saharan Africa. The disease may range in severity from a mild viral illness to severe hemorrhagic fever. It typically presents with fever, headache, myalgia, conjunctival injection, and relative bradycardia. Although many patients recover after the initial phase, some progress after a brief period of improvement to a toxic phase characterized by jaundice, acute liver and kidney failure, coagulopathy, shock, and death. An effective vaccine is available for the prevention of yellow fever. There is no specific antiviral treatment.
