Pigmented spots
Changes in normal pigmentation alter the color of the skin. The skin color is determined by the pigment melanin, which is produced in specialized skin cells – melanocytes. When a disease affects these cells, changes in pigmentation occur. These changes can occur locally, i.e. affect a certain area of the skin, or the entire body. Increased pigmentation darkens the skin, while decreased pigmentation lightens it.
